The Ecstatic was described by music journalists as a conscious and alternative Hip Hop record with an eccentric, internationalist quality. Mos leaps from raw spit to neo-soul croon (“Roses”) and bodega serenade (“No Hay Nada Mas”) as effortlessly as the man on the sleeve leaps between two buildings (a still from Charles Burnett’s 1978 film Killer of Sheep). Other highlights include “Pretty Dancer,” “Casa Bey” and the Dilla-produced “History” featuring Black Star homie Talib Kweli. Slick Rick) and “Wahid,” two of the album’s toughest records. In 2017, this sort of cross-pollination is commonplace, but in 2009, Mos was a movie star, and him tapping Madlib for beats was a huge deal (seven whole years before ‘Lib had a credit on a Kanye record). For his fourth (and at time of writing, most recent) solo full-length, Mos reaches into the underground and scoops up cult Stones Throw beatsmiths Madlib, Oh No and Georgia Anne Muldrow. Mos Def sets himself apart from the rest of the post- Rawkus set by constantly tearing up the rulebook and thinking outside of the box, tapping into blues rock on 2004’s The New Danger and using Juvenile’s “Nolia Clap” as a vehicle for a spine-tingling indictment of the Bush Administration on 2006’s True Magic. “The way I feel sometimes its too hard to sit still / things are so passionate, times are so real” - can’t think of a more important time to repress this record than right now. However, where lack lustre production had left previous albums feeling muddled and directionless, attention to detail and a stellar cast of producers have seamlessly integrated a range of genres into one consistent work. The thudding timpani of ‘Quiet Dog Bite Hard’ sounds almost copy and pasted from the rhythmic experiments of his sophomore album The New Danger, and the ironically named ‘Life in Marvellous Times’ would’ve slotted neatly alongside the synth laden beats of 2006’s True Magic. In fact, the album is littered with musical avenues Mos Def has ventured into before and failed to return from.
The effortless synthesis between beat and lyric is hugely reassuring, as if to say ‘This time things will be different’, but as soon as the sheer impact of this track wears off, one has to wonder how different this is to his previous Rock ’n’ Roll failings.
Jul 08th 2009 I downloaded today from Amazon. With opener ‘Supermagic’ the album begins in a blaze of electric guitar and feverishly delivered rhymes. From his legendary 1998 Black Star collaboration with Talib Kweli to his acclaimed first three solo albums - Black on Both Sides (1999), The New Danger (2004) and True Magic (2006) - which were credited with bringing hip-hop back to its soapbox roots, Mos Def has remained one of righteous hip-hop's leading lights.
